About Reframe-Simulations

Learning & ‘Reframing’
The basic idea of ‘Reframe’ is the power of dramatically increased understanding that can be found in a different perspective, a ‘Reframing’ of one’s viewpoint. This is something we each have experienced. It can be seen in the insight we find in a creative moment. Consider a brief personal example:

One morning I drove to the airport in Montana to pick up my brother who was flying in from Denver for the holidays. It had snowed the previous night and there were many cars that had slide off the road and were stuck in the snow banks. I was driving about 20 mph in a 55 mph zone because the road was extremely slippery. I thought about my brother landing on a plane at perhaps 160 mph & wondered out loud if the flight would be redirected. It was a challenge to keep my all-wheel drive vehicle on the road at 20 mph!

My father, a pilot, responded: “They aren’t steering the plane with the wheels. They’ve got a tail 6 stories tall which provides all the friction they need to turn the plane.”

I immediately realized I was using an inappropriate frame of reference. I was so absorbed in steering my car, I forgot to apply an aerodynamic framework to consider how pilots control a plane. Reframing the situation let me realize the snowy runway would not be as difficult a problem as I had imagined. My brother’s plane landed safely on time.

Reframe Simulations suggest alternative frames. As participants explore contrasting views, they have an opportunity to rethink their own mental models and modify them in a simulated, feedback-rich environment that supports experimentation and learning.
